Longboard truck parts
The top longboard trucks for you are the ones that best fit your riding style. But first what are longboard trucks? Longboard trucks function as the main axles of your longboard connecting your wheels together and attaching them to the longboard. All longboard trucks are sold in pairs of two because there is one truck for the front of your board and one for the back.
The best longboard trucks have many parts and it is essential to understand the effect of each of them on the riding. There are 5 main parts that must be considered when purchasing the best longboard truck for you.
Baseplate: The Baseplate connects the longboard truck to the deck of the longboard. Designed to provide even pressure on the base of the board, it is used to mount the longboard truck to the deck through the use of screws and 4 or 6 mounting holes.
Kingpin: The kingpin is where you see the major differences among longboard trucks. The kingpin is basically just a big pin that holds the different parts of the truck together. The kingpin of a longboard truck is completely replaceable for only a fraction of the cost of replacing an entire longboard truck. The main difference in longboard trucks is in the location of the kingpin.
- Standard Kingpin (SKP): Standard kingpin trucks have the kingpin facing towards the center of the board. Standard kingpin trucks are typically used when doing skateboarding tricks because the kingpin bolt does not interfere with grinds on rails. Some companies such as Gullwing or Independent do offer the Standard Kinpin trucks for cruising longboards but they are not as common.
- Reverse Kingpin (RKP): Reverse Kingpin trucks are more commonly used for longboards because they are responsive at low speeds while offering more control and stability at higher speeds. In reverse kingpin trucks, the kingpin faces towards the front of the board. If you aren’t looking to go into the skatepark, reverse kingpin trucks will give you a more responsive board for carving, downhill, and cruising.
Bushings: The bushings of the best longboard trucks are designed to affect the way the board reacts the rider. Typically each longboard truck has two bushings which provide a cushion between the different moving parts of the trucks. Bushings come in varying hardnesses. The harder the bushing the stiffer the trucks appear to be and the harder the rider must lean in order to turn. For very responsive trucks, riders should lean towards trucks with soft bushings.
Hangar: On longboard trucks, the hanger is the T-shaped aluminum alloy beam which attaches the wheels to the main body of the truck. During skateboarding tricks such as rail grinds, this is the part of the truck that will be in direct contact.
Riser: Risers are an optional accessory to longboard trucks. Risers reused to adjust the height of your board off of the ground and increase resistance to vibration. Risers are easy to install between the truck and the longboard and are inexpensive.
Choosing the Best Longboard Trucks
To choose the best longboard trucks you must know what you want to be able to do with your longboard. If you want the best longboard trucks for carving, you should get reverse king pin trucks with a 50-degree angle. The high angle makes longboards very responsive and lets riders lean slightly to turn a large amount. 50-degree longboard trucks are typically recommended for carving and downhill under 35 mph.
At higher speeds, the best longboard trucks often feature lower angles to a baseplate. The very popular Caliber 44 features a 44-degree angle which, while still allowing the longboard to turn quickly, also makes the board very stable at high speeds.
This makes this longboard truck perfect for more advanced riders. For more of our recommendations, see the best-selling longboard trucks and our reviews of them below!
