What Is a Penny Board?
A Penny Board is a class of skateboards defined by two things: the short length and the plastic deck. This makes the boards perfect for commuting as they can easily be fit in a backpack or carried. Ben Mackay founded the company Penny Boards after which these short skateboards are named.
There are two main kinds of Penny Boards: the original Penny Board measuring 22 inches from end to end and the Penny Nickel measuring 27 inches. Many people prefer the Penny Nickel because it allows for more footspace on the deck of the board while still being highly portable.
The problem with these skateboards is that they can be pricey. After compiling a list of cheap longboards for close to (or under) 100 bucks, I knew cheap penny boards was the next area I wanted to tackle.
Top Picks: Cheap Penny Boards
The Boss Board
This Penny look-a-like is my personal favorite cheap penny board product. The Boss Board measures 22” from end to end and has a deck constructed out of high-quality plastic. It comes with aluminum trucks, 59mm wheels, and ABEC 7 bearings.
The Boss Board comes in at under half of the price of traditional Penny Boards and as such it is my favorite when shopping for this type of board.
One factor that might affect your decision is the limited color options. As compared to Penny Boards which has over 15 different color combinations, the Boss Board only comes in with 4 (check the color combinations out).
High Bounce Complete 22” Skateboard
I like the High Bounce Complete board
because it is offered in so many unique designs. With 29 different designs, you are guaranteed to find one that fits your style and personality.
Construction wise, this is similar to the Boss Board and original Penny Boards. The deck is made out of high strength plastic and comes with polyurethane wheels and ABEC 7 bearings.
One factor to consider is that this board only supports riders weighing less than 187 lbs. If the limit is an issue, I would suggest the Penny Nickel as the bigger skateboard will be able to support more weight.
Ridge Skateboards Big Brother Large Retro Cruiser
A best seller and alternative to the Penny Board for years, Ridge Skateboards has constantly produced high-quality boards and the Big Brother Retro Cruiser is no exception
. This board is designed as another alternative to the Penny Nickel and it seems to be successful.
By appearance, it looks identical to the Penny Nickel with the only exception being the Ridge Brand stamped in the middle of the board instead of Penny logo.
Ridge Skateboards claims that the deck is made out of automotive industry strength polyurethane plastic which gives it a flexible base while also allowing it to support heavier riders.
As a bonus, this retro cruiser comes with 87A super soft yellow bushings which allow for the perfect mix between carving and stability for the rider.
General Tips on How to find Cheap Penny Boards
It can be hard to find cheap penny boards because the company, Penny, quickly dominated the market. That doesn’t mean it’s impossible though and this article will show you exactly how to find the best deals and a cheap penny board for you.
My first tip is to shop off brand. As the dominant leader in the market, Penny Skateboards can charge a premium on all of their boards simply because it carries their name. For girls, this would be the equivalent of buying a Coach purse instead of a knockoff one even though it is vastly more expensive.
In the words of Lil Dicky, “save dat money!” A Penny board is simply a piece of plastic mounted to two trucks and wheels. It is a very simple board to make and it can often be found cheaper from different brands, such as the ones below.
My second tip is to look around at the different color options that each board is available in. Just because a short board is $80 in this color combination does not mean that it is the same price in every color combo.
Prices vary wildly between the different combos leaving room for you to snatch great Penny Boards at a cheap price.
