The Atom Pintail longboard is another longboard great for beginners. It has the classic pintail shape as can be seen from the photo that helps avoid wheelbite when making very sharp turns. While at 39” long it has a smallish deck, it has the perfect components for superb maneuverability.

The Board
The Atom Pintail measures 39 inches long, shorter by 2 inches than the Atom Dropthrough, and has a 9.4 inch wide deck. The deck is made out of full maple laminate which gives the longboard a slightly stiff feel when you are riding it.
The symmetrical pintail design of this longboard helps this board turn a lot quicker than other longboards. The almost surf board like design enables riders to make smooth S carves all around their local roads.
The trucks are top mounted which allows the turning ability that the Atom Pintail is so recognized for. measure 8.5 inches long and are made out of aluminum. Initially, riders might have to loosen the bolts a little to give the trucks some flexibility but after that, they’re set.

If, after riding the Atom Pintail, you start feeling an urgent burn for carving machines, I would recommend a slightly higher quality longboard, such as the Loaded Vanguard. The Loaded Vanguard combines top mounted trucks with a bamboo board to create an absurd carving machine.
Riding the Atom Pintail
Standing on the deck of this longboard, I was impressed at the mix between sturdy and flexible that Atom had designed into the deck construction. It bent around an inch when I stood on it which was just enough to be comfortable yet feel like the board was constructed out of a sturdy material.
True to its design, riding this longboard was a breeze. With just the slightest shift of my weight, I was able to turn this board easily and make S curves all down my local hills.
I took this board on sidewalks with tight 90 degree turns and was surprised that it was able to make it around them. Admittedly, I was on the sidewalk so I wasn’t going that fast but this little longboard was able to easily make it around the tightest turns I encountered.
On straight downhills, though, the performance suffered. Almost no longboards with a pintail shape are designed to be ridden at high speeds and the Atom Pintail is no exception. Once I started hitting speeds above 20 mph, I started experiencing speed wobbles.

Despite the Atom Pintails below average performance at high speeds, I still really liked the look of the overall board. At a price of less than $100, this longboard is affordable for beginners looking to get into the sport without spending a boatload of money. For people looking for a cheap carving longboard to casually ride and use for commuting, the Atom Pintail is the longboard to beat.
