Self-Balancing Scooters have quickly become the biggest alternative transportation fad a couple years ago. With so many different brands how can customers choose between them? While the origin story is complex, many of the companies offering these types of boards are simply cheaper Chinese knock-offs of the same product.

Why would you not go for the cheapest board then? With many of these copy-cat companies, you will not receive customer service after buying and will be stuck if your hoverboard breaks. Review Longboards recommends buying a protection plan or ensuring that the product has a warranty before buying any self-balancing scooter.

Review Longboards has taken it upon ourselves to evaluate each of the top selling self-balancing scooters on quality, customer service, and price. We present our top recommendations below.

SwagWay X1 Hands-Free Smart Board

swagway reviewWith the exact combination of price and high-quality components, this board excels as an alternative method of transportation. It features zero degree turning which allows riders to go anywhere and make the tightest turns. While this board can’t go up 20% grade hills as many of the best electric longboards can, it can go up a steep 15% hill with ease.

This self-balancing scooter variant comes with 6.5-inch wheels meaning it’s able to handle cracks and small rocks in the sidewalk that would trip up similar size scooters or skateboards. In addition, with a range of 20 miles, this board is great for taking you to and from class or work in style.

The long range on a single charge means that riders can wait multiple days before having to charge their SwagWay Smart Board again. If riders don’t want to wait to charge their battery, charging only takes 1 hour and will give you around 4-5 hours of riding.

The main advantage this board has over all of the copy-cat designs is that SwagWay is a US brand meaning you can expect excellent customer service and a quality product.

As part of this excellent customer service, this board comes with a 1-year warranty when you purchase it. Customers are covered in the event of a defective component or damage to the SwagWay self-balancing scooter.

With a lot of positive reviews, it is clear that the SwagWay X1 remains at the top of the competitive hoverboard market in terms of quality and price.

Razor Hovertrax Self Balancing Scooter by Razor

razor_hovertraxFor approx $100 more than the SwagWay, the Razor Hovertrax comes backed with Razor, the multinational company who brought us the popular scooters.

Razor scooters have been around since 2000 and are a very trusted brand in the United States. Customers can be assured that there will be absolutely no issues in quality with the Razor Hovertrax which is a major advantage. Customers can also be assured of high-quality customer service for which Razor is known for.

The top speed of the board is only 6mph compared to Swag Way’s 10mph top speed but it can run for a maximum of 115 minutes or almost 2 hours.

This product also comes with a free manufacturing warranty to ensure that you receive a quality product and the support of the multinational company, Razor. In many ways, the Razor Hovertrax is similar to the Swag Way except with the support of an already existing major company. If you want to be assured that you will receive a high-quality product, the Razor Hovertrax Electric Self Balancing Scooter is the scooter for you.

The Power Board by Hoverboard

power_board

With the same price as the Swagway hoverboard, at first, there appears to be little difference between the two boards. However, the PowerBoard is made by a company called Hoverboard which is based in the USA and features good English while promoting their brand.

The top speed of the board is only 8mph compared to Swagway’s 10mph top speed but it makes up for it in battery life. The Power Board balancing scooter can go 6 hours on a charge, an hour more than the maximum that the Swagway can run.

This product also comes with a free 1-year warranty and US based customer support which has received excellent reviews from customers.

In many ways, it is similar to Swag Way with a better battery and a longer range. If you want to be assured that you will receive a high-quality product, the Powerboard is the scooter for you.

Self Balancing Scooter – Urban Magic

erover promotionalCurrently, the cheapest hoverboard on the market, the Self Balancing Scooter from Urban Magic is a great deal if you just want to get rolling without spending a lot of money. The basic design of the scooter is nearly identical to the Swag Way but the specifications are slightly different due to a smaller battery.

The Self Balancing Scooter has only a 10-mile range compared to the Swag Way’s 20 miles.  The build quality of the scooter is lower than the Swag Way but that is to be expected for a lower price.

For some customers, the bearing in the center that allows each scooter to perform zero degree turns started to develop friction as the riding time increased. Customers also noticed slight manufacturing errors leading to some slight touching of the wheel with the protective wheel well. Over a period of time, both of these problems have the chance to become a nuisance.

Are these potential small defects worth the savings to you though? Ultimately it depends on how long you want to use your hoverboard. SwagWay Boards can come with a warranty and last for a year. Cheaper scooters such as these will not that long. If you just want to show off to your friends though, this could be an attractive option.

Hover Tech – Self Balancing Scooter

hover_xThe Hover Tech self-balancing hoverboard has risen to prominence recently due it’s reduced price compared to the popular brands.

Hover Tech is a company based in the USA that provides quality customer service. While relatively new, they have an average rating of 4/5 stars on Amazon across all of their customer reviews.

This seems to back up Hover Tech’s claims that they provide great customer support and provide a quality product.

The Hover tech scooter combined with a carrying bag and a warranty is among one of the most popular packages.

With a top speed of 10 mph, the Hover X self-balancing hoverboard goes faster than the Razor Hovertrax. On range, The Hover Tech scooter and Anhell Hover Boost are about equal with a range of around 10 miles or 2 hours.

This board comes with a full 1-year warranty to ensure that the product is high quality. If customers have any problem with their product within the first year they can return the Hover Tech hoverboard free of charge and get their money back.

If 1 year does not seem like enough of a safety period for you or you want additional protection, purchasing the Square Trade 2 Year Bike/Scooter Protection Plan. For less than $30, this warranty will protect your Hover Tech for 2 years and guarantee that the product stays operational or you will get a choice to get a new one or receive your money back.
